English Harbor is the island’s real attraction, for it is here that the English navy found the Caribbean’s most perfectly sheltered harbor during their campaign against the French. Here, ancient buildings and store houses, with the remains of Fort Berkeley are contrasted by high-dollar yachts that spend the winter in the harbor. If you head up to Shirley’s heights, you can enjoy good views, lively reggae, and local bars.
Runaway Bay and Dickenson Bay are adjacent strips of white sand beaches. This is about the only lively tourist spot on the island, because most other places are fairly private. Diving at Deep Bay is exciting because there is a submerged wreak here. The remains of Fort Barrington are also here.
