Larnaca is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cyprus. It is close to many interesting historic sites and has some excellent beaches. Larnaca also has a busy night scene that comes alive on the beach after dark in the form of many waterfront restaurants and bars.

Attractions in Larnaca

To get a taste of the area’s history, head to Larnaca Fort. The fort, located on the seafront, is one of Larnaca’s ancient attractions. It is strongly connected to the region’s history, having originally been built as protection from invaders and then used as a prison in the early years of British rule.

St Lazarus Church has an interesting past that makes it a curious tourist draw card. The story goes that after Lazarus was resurrected by Jesus, he came to Larnaca, where he lived for 30 years. Supposedly, his remains were discovered on the site of the church in 890, and were then transferred to his final resting place in Marseilles, France.

In the northwest of Larnaca are the ruins of ancient Kition. The ruins worth visiting to see the remains of five temples, and the lower part of the northern city walls, constructed of monstrous stones.

Airport and car hire in Larnaca

Larnaca airport is a mere 6 km. from the city. The airport serves as the principal port of entry to the Greek side of Cyprus. The airport becomes busy between the months of May and November, but practically hibernates in the off-season.

The best way to get into Larnaca from the airport is to take a taxi unless you want to hire your own car.
