At the heart of the Altstadt, the Old City, lies the Marienplatz, where many of Munich's draw cards lie. Here you can stroll through the square and visit a sidewalk cafe or explore some of the nearby chuches. One of the main attractions is the 19th-century neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus, an extravagant building on the northern side of the square.

Maximilianstrasse, east of Marienplatz, is perfect for shopping during the day and visiting bars and nightclubs at night.

The Schloss Nymphenburg, an amazing baroque palace that was built in the early 18th century as the royal family’s summer residence, makes a great tour stop. Also, a magnificent English-style park surrounds the palace and includes: a hunting lodge, Chinese teahouse, bathing house, and tropical greenhouses.

Driving around Munich and visiting some of the fantastic castles and palaces nearby is a most enchanting experience. This is easily done with a hire car.
