More traditional then Hora and only 7 kilometres away, in the centre of the island, is Ano Mera. This charming town has several sites of historical interest. The Monastery of Panayia Tourliani, southeast of town, dates from the 18th century and has a marble bell tower with intricate folk carvings.

One of the greenest spots on Mykonos is nearby Ano Mera’s monastery, on it lies the 12th century Monastery of Paleokastro.

The main reason why so many people keep coming back to Mykonos is its excellent beaches though it is rewarding to expolore the island by hire car. The airport is 4 kilometers from the town of Mykonos. The airport also receives international flights from many European destinations, mainly charter flights.

Mykonos has one of the best bus services in the Greek islands; the buses operate frequently and on schedule from the airport to the town.
