Paphos is located on the southwestern coast of Cyprus. This harbour town has not only great beaches and a beautiful, scenic coastline, but also some great historical sites. Paphos has a rich history and boasts some excellent archaeological sites.
Attractions in Paphos
There are truly some fascinating historical sites in Paphos. If you go to the end of Kyriakou Nikolaou Street, there are a series of Roman mansions that are still being excavated. Those that have been unearthed have revealed exquisite mosaic floors made of tiny cubes of marble, stone and glass paste, and depicting mythological scenes.
The ‘Tombs of the Kings’ are in fact not tombs of kings at all, but the burial place of about 100 Ptolemaic noblemen who lived and died in Paphos between 3 BC and 3 AD. The tombs are most unique, because they are carved from solid rock and embellished with Doric pillars and frescoes.
Two of the best museums in town are The District Archaeological Museum and the Byzantine Museum. The District Archaeological Museum features a collection of Cypriot artefacts from the Neolithic period to 1700, while the Byzantine Museum has icons from the 12th to 18th centuries.
There two castles in Paphos, both are worth visitng. One is Saranta Kolones, which stands near the harbour and was built in the 12th century; the other is Paphos Castle, which was originally built as a Byzantine fort to defend the harbour, but has been destroyed and restored many times.

Airport and car hire in Paphos
Paphos International Airport is Cyprus’s second international airport and serves 1.5 million passengers annually. It provides access to Paphos, Coral Bay, and Limassol. The airport is located 15 km east of the city.
There is a bus service available from outside the airport terminal, with regular journeys between the airport and the town, or you can take a taxi into Paphos.
